Coach Jeff Tambroni: A Champion of the Heart

  • by

When people talk about the legacy of Penn State Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach Jeff Tambroni, they often start with his accolades — Big Ten titles, Final Four appearances, and his reputation as one of the most respected minds in the game. But to truly understand the impact of Jeff Tambroni, you have to look beyond the wins and stats. You have to meet Gavin Royer.

On December 3, 2014, Coach Tambroni and the Penn State Men’s Lacrosse program adopted Gavin through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation’s Adopt-A-Child Program, a life-changing initiative that pairs children battling pediatric cancer with athletic teams to provide love, support, and friendship. From that day forward, Gavin didn’t just become a part of the team — he became family.

For over a decade, Gavin has stood on the sidelines, traveled to games, and been embraced by players as one of their own. His presence has become more than symbolic — it’s a source of inspiration, strength, and perspective for the entire program. And at the heart of it all is Jeff Tambroni, the epitome of what it means to be a FOJ NEDvocate.

In a world where college athletics can become consumed by rankings, recruiting, and pressure, Coach Tambroni brings something different: humanity. His leadership isn’t just measured in wins — it’s seen in the way he leads with compassion, humility, and heart. Every player who has worn a Penn State uniform under his guidance will tell you: playing for Coach Tambroni is about becoming a better lacrosse player — and a better man.

Tambroni’s bond with Gavin reflects the very core of Friends of Jaclyn’s mission — to change the narrative from fear and uncertainty to one of hope and connection. Gavin continues to support the team not just as a fan, but as a fighter and a symbol of what it means to persevere. And Coach Tambroni has ensured that his story remains central to the team’s identity.

“Having Gavin with us reminds us why we do what we do,” Tambroni once said. “It keeps us grounded. It keeps us grateful.”

While his accolades are undeniable — including national coach of the year honors and building Penn State into a perennial powerhouse — it’s this kind of leadership that sets Coach Tambroni apart. He embodies the very mission of Spreading NED — transforming lives by bringing hope, joy, and awareness to the words “No Evidence of Disease.”

Coach Tambroni doesn’t just coach lacrosse. He coaches life — and in doing so, has become a mentor, advocate, and champion for Gavin, for FOJ, and for every young man who’s had the privilege to play for him.

In the eyes of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, and to all who believe in the power of sport to heal and uplift, Jeff Tambroni is more than a coach — he’s a hero.
